Kaufman

Space age home of Brooklyn musician Josh Kaufman.
Here’s a little behind the scenes glimpse of the new Balthrop, Alabama video for “You’ve Gotta be Gay” from the forthcoming epic album, “We Have Electricity”.  Shooting w/ comedian Murray Hill yesterday and today at neighborhood venue Jalopy.  Amazingly well organized by Jemison Thorsby and the crew.  Sweet shit!

This morning Dawn Landes and I worked on her new record some.  We (Dawn, Ray Rizzo and I) started it last year and it’s been idle for a bit.  Picking up awesomely as of late!!! Really beautiful stuff.
Then we shared a tuna sandwich from Almondine, complements of the shitty Dylan.

Brian Kantor and his new bass drum at our DUMBO studio, Homeward Sound.  We’re back at work on an album that began last winter and has been hibernating since.  Good to have you back elusive, nameless and beautiful recordings!!!  Don’t be a stranger.

Outside of Great North Sound Society in Maine for a pre-holiday recording session w/ Josh Ritter, Liam Hurley and Sam Kassirer.  GNSS is a wonderful recording studio put together by Mr Kassirer in an old farm house located in Parsonsfield, Maine.  A truly magical, secluded and inspiring place to work.

Wow!  Performed w/ Caithlin De Marrais and Owen the other night in Philadelphia and had a great time.  I’ve always been cursed w/ weird Philly shows, but the last few have been pretty magical.  Thanks to the home of cream cheese, Ben Franklin, our founding fathers(Hall & Oates) and light cream cheese.

Rocketship Park songs reviewed!

Rock et shipPark draws its name from a play ground in the home town of cre ator Josh Kauf man.  It’s an appro pri ate metaphor for an artist whose music bal ances bit ter sweet reflection with a hope ful child like wonder.   At some point we real ize that we’re too big to fit through the mouth of the rocket shaped slide but, with luck, we never for get how much fun it used to be.  Kaufman remem bers and con veys that in the music on his new album, Cakes & Cook ies.  Here too, we get a con ve nient metaphor.  The album entices the sweet-toothed lis tener with a cover illus tra tion of the epony mous delec tables and a unique pro mo tional offer—each copy pur chased comes with a free home made cookie! While one must never judge an album on the dessert, here it pro vides a taste of the con tents.  Rock et shipPark’s orig i nal blend of sym phonic folk-pop is rich, imme di ate, and above all, homemade.  NPR noted that it offers “a sense of peace and nos tal gia that grounds even the most anx ious of listen ers.”

Sunday night i’ll be heading up to Sam Kassirer's Great North Sound Society in Parsonsfield, ME to record guitar thingys on what i presume will be Del Barber's forthcoming LP.  Until then it's shrimp and pepper sauce from the Great NY Noodle Town and keeping it together in Brooklyn, NY.

The summer of 2011 was spent mainly indoors, specifically in basements… primarily the basement of 68 Jay Street in DUMBO, Brooklyn at Saltlands Recording studio.  I, along with pals Steve Salett and Jim Smith recorded, arranged and produced  a lot of music.  One of the big thrills and challenges was getting to work on the new Balthrop, Alabama record.  Check out the first installment - an EP of remixes as well as the title track from their forthcoming LP entitled “Electricity”.

PS - follow that Balthrop link and you can also view Michael Arthur’s badass and beautiful video for the single.

Had the honor of working on the new Thieving Irons record this past summer at D James Goodwin’s Isokon studio in Woodstock, NY.  This is the first single from said record, “So Long”.  Sounds beautiful!!
