Kaufman

Space age home of Brooklyn musician Josh Kaufman.

The world rejoices!!!  New Higgins record Straight As is available on Serious Business Records and Tapes!  We’re all really psyched about how this one came out.  Thanks Efrain for the sweet promo video.

Just returned from a couple Yellowbirds duo shows supporting Guster - really fun!  Last night was with Thieving Irons in Woodstock featuring D James Goodwin on extra drums and synth - he’s a truly overqualified “5th Beatle”.
Missing Bobby…

I guess that actually happened…  Still processing.  What an honor to work up these tunes together.  Thanks again Bobby!

So, I grew up playing a lot of different kinds of music, but when I was in high school their was really only one band I wanted to be in (besides REM, The Band, and The Beatles) and that was The Grateful Dead.  God damn they were awesome!  So now, years later, I find myself flying out to Marin, CA to play guitar with Bob Weir and my friends from The National.  Anyway, i’m looking forward to it.

It’s all part of a benefit concert/HD broadcast for a voter registration organization called HeadCount.

Above is a preview video they made for the event… Worth checking out.  I look kinda fat and Scott didn’t like hearing the sound of his voice but it’ll give you a good idea of what we’re going out there to do.

Also, if you’re in Brooklyn wondering how you can participate, wonder no more!  Littlefield is holding a viewing party for the gig along w/ a live screening!

Just follow the linkleberries.

Heading down to SXSW in Austin, Texas to play with long time collaborators Dawn Landes and The Hounds at Lustre Pearl on Saturday March 17th!  Should be a fun show.  Also, excited to be playing another show w/ the fabulous Ed Romanoff on Friday March 16th at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters.

The video above is something we made this past winter in Brooklyn for the Bowery presents new Youtube thingy.  Should act as nice promo for Dawn’s new French record and Childrens Book.

That’s the beautiful Annie Nero on Bass, Ray Rizzo(another fine Italian) on snare and laps, Dawn Landes on tune, singing and guitar and me on tenor banjo.

Just returned from a few days in Memphis, TN where i was performing w/ Ed Romanoff and Mary Gauthier.  These shows were part of the 24th International Folk Alliance Conference.  On top of being a part of some beautiful music, I finally had time to visit the Stax museum!  Did you know that Otis Redding turned down “Just like a Woman”?  Sorry Bob…

In October Josh Ritter and I(w/ Jim Smith engineering) recorded a beautiful 6 song EP entitled “Bringing in the Darlings” which has just been announced this week.  Go get your copy here!
Also, “Why”, one of the tunes from said EP was used on NBC’s show Parenthood last night.  If you’re like me and you missed it, it can be seen here http://www.nbc.com/parenthood/ video/politics/1383755/

It stands to reason that i’ve shirked my blog responsibilities for too long…  Oh how i’ve missed the chance to tell you all about so many exciting music adventures.  Like our 2nd hugely successful Serious Business Records Rock n Roll revue!  Or Paul Brill’s Record Release show (w/ sweet horn section!) or Balthrop, Alabama at the Living Room the other night…  What about that amazing stripped down Dawn Landes performance at Jalopy?  We killed is what!
Well, pictured above was certainly an unexpected highlight.  Sam Cohen and I had a fun and inspiring live Yellowbirds jam session on the East Village Radio program Beyond Beyond is Beyond the other afternoon(followed by lentil soup from B&H Dairy).
Speaking of Yellowbirds…  Below are some upcoming tour dates!
Feb 15, 2012 - Boston - Great Scott - w/QUILT - tickets
Feb 16, 2012 - Winooski, VT - Monkey House
Feb 17, 2012 - New York - Mercury Lounge w/Woodman (late show) - ticketsFeb 18, 2012 - Harrisburg PA - Moviate Coop

Very excited to be playing at Pete’s Candy Store tonight with my good pals Higgins and Bob Parins.  Many of you who have listened to or seen Rocketship Park and Yellowbirds will recognize these usual suspects - if not by name, through their dazzling sonic powers.
Looks like we’re starting around 9/9:30.

First gig with The Combine last night at Cowgirl Seahorse!  The Combine is a David Lynchish/Texas swing/pseudo-parlor-jazz combo led by pedal steel monster Jonathan Gregg and augmented by Brian Kantor(drum zs), Terence Murren(bass zs) and myself(trying to keep up zs).

A recent afternoon spent recording some pretty tunes for Dawn Landes' new record with Ray Rizzo at Superfund in Gowanus, Brooklyn.  Engineered by the wonderful Arun Pandian in his cavernous echo-filled suite.  Dawn wasn't into this photo but, it's not her blog…

Last night at Saltlands Jim Smith and I recorded Bhi Bhiman and Lauren Balthrop singing to a sweet Andrew Vladeck song called “Chasing the Sun”.  Jim and I are producing this tune for an Occupy Wall Street music compilation that Andrew and Bhi are both participating in.

"Sat Jan 28, Littlefield, Brooklyn, NY You will see Wilbury Night emerge, one time only, as a party thrown by people who believe in the Wilbury spirit, who prefer to play music together rather than separately, and who want you to join in. The January air is cold. Be at Littlefield in Brooklyn, together with your best friends and your coolest family members on this one night, conveniently a Saturday, the 28th of January to be exact, as we peer through the Wilbury prism into the heart of our loves for rock and roll music. Expect Benji Cossa, Higgins, Rocketship Park and the Unsacred Hearts to present a rich program built from their own reputable original catalogs and from the deep career catalogs of Lucky, Lefty, Otis, Nelson and Charlie T. Jr. This night will be warm and full of true love.”
